Awards of Excellence Categories

I. Public Education Awards - $7,000

Seven $1,000 awards will be given to organizations or individuals for
outstanding public education activities involving citizens working together to
improve their community’s appearance. Applications will be accepted for the
following sub-categories.
Programs directed toward:

  • Adults 
  • Businesses 
  • Government 
  • Media 
  • Schools – Grades K-8 
  • Schools – Grades 9-12 
  • Higher Education – Junior Colleges, Universities & Vocational

II. Public Participation Awards - $8,000

Given to an organization or group of individuals who are superior in the promotion, participation, and scope of a public participation event.

Great American Cleanup™ of Tennessee Awards
Three $1,000 awards will be given in the following subcategories:

  • Most Improved Program(s) 
  • Most Innovative Event(s) 
  • Most Comprehensive Great American Cleanup™ Program 

America Recycles Day of Tennessee Awards
One $1,000 award will be given to an America Recycles Day event that demonstrates creativity, broad scope of citizen and government involvement, and total results.

Adopt-A-Highway Awards
Two $1,000 awards will be given in the following subcategories:

  • Small Group, under 10 
  • Large Group, over 10

Lakes, Rivers & Streams Litter Free Award 
One $2,000 award will be given to the best organized effort to promote/participate in cleanup of TN waterways.

III. Leadership Awards - $7,000

Edith Heller Lifetime Achievement Award

The Edith Heller Lifetime Achievement Award is presented in grateful appreciation of her 30 plus years of dedicated service to Tennessee and the nation. A once-in-a-lifetime distinction award for a person who has demonstrated longtime leadership in raising public awareness about solid waste issues, litter prevention, community greening, and/or recycling. This person has also successfully demonstrated the need for citizens to participate in activities that preserve and enhance natural resources and public lands in Tennessee. This person may be a volunteer or employee who has consistently excelled above and beyond expectations. This award is the highest one given by Keep Tennessee Beautiful. Each winner can only be given this award one time. The award money of $2,000 will be given to the non-profit environmental organization of his/her choice.

Larry E. Potter Law Enforcement Award (new)

The Larry E. Potter Law Enforcement Award is a once in a lifetime award recognizing a law enforcement professional, such as a police officer, prosecutor, judge or environmental compliance officer, who has gone above and beyond in their approaches to enforcement of environmental laws and regulations. The winner will receive a $1,000 which will be given to the non-profit environmental organization of his/her choice. Click HERE to learn more about Larry L. Potter.

Outstanding Educational and Community Leadership 

Four $1,000 awards will be given to an organization and individuals for outstanding educational and community leadership. Serving as role models, these leaders have given beyond the norm. The Martin L. Kennedy Awards, named in honor of the first TDOT Highway Beautification Ofce Administrator, recognizes outstanding, professional service by a LGP or KAB staff member. The award money will be given to the non-profit environmental organization of his/
her choice.

  • Community Group 
  • Community Volunteer 
  • Martin L. Kennedy Award for Outstanding Litter Grant Administrator 
  • Martin L. Kennedy Award for Outstanding Keep America Beautiful Affiliate Coordinator

IV. TDOT County Litter Grant Program Awards - $12,000

Class I Award

One $3,000 award will be given a Litter Grant Program in one of the following counties: Bledsoe, Cannon, Chester, Clay, Crockett, Decatur, DeKalb, Fentress, Grundy, Hancock, Houston, Jackson, Johnson, Lake, Lewis, Meigs, Moore, Morgan, Perry, Pickett, Scott, Sequatchie, Smith, Stewart, Trousdale, Unicoi, Union, and Van Buren Counties.

Class II Award

One $3,000 award will be given to a Litter Grant Program in one of the following counties: Bedford, Benton, Campbell, Cheatham, Claiborne, Cocke, Dyer, Fayette, Franklin, Grainger, Hardeman, Hardin, Haywood, Henderson, Hickman, Humphreys, Jeferson, Lauderdale, Loudon, Macon, Marion, Marshall, McNairy, Overton, Polk, Rhea, Tipton, Warren, Wayne, and White Counties.

Class III Award

One $3,000 award will be given to a Litter Grant Program in one of the following counties: Anderson, Blount, Bradley, Carroll, Carter, Coffee, Cumberland, Dickson, Gibson, Giles, Greene, Hamblen, Hawkins, Henry, Lawrence, Lincoln, McMinn, Madison, Maury, Monroe, Montgomery, Obion, Putnam, Roane, Robertson, Rutherford, Sevier, Sullivan, Sumner, Washington, Weakley, Williamson, and Wilson Counties.

Class IV Award

One $3,000 award will be given to a Litter Grant Program in one of the following counties: Davidson, Hamilton, Knox, and Shelby County.

V. Keep America Beautiful - Tennessee Affiliate Awards - $12,000

KAB applicants in each category must be in good standing with KAB national office.

Population 40,000 & Under

One $3,000 award will be given to a KAB affiliate in one of the following programs: Keep Bristol Beautiful, Keep Chester County Beautiful, Keep Cocke County Beautiful, Keep Fayetteville/Lincoln County Beautiful, Keep Henry County Beautiful, Keep Jonesborough Beautiful, Keep Lakeland Beautiful, Keep McNairy Beautiful, and Keep Union County Beautiful.

Population 60,000 & Under

One $3,000 award will be given to a KAB affiliate in one of the following programs: Keep Cleveland/Bradley KAB System, Keep Coffee County Beautiful, Keep Kingsport Beautiful, Keep McMinn Beautiful, Keep Morristown/Hamblen Beautiful, Keep Roane Litter Free, Keep Tipton County Beautiful, and Monroe County Beautiful, Inc.

Population 100,000 & Under

One $3,000 award will be given to a KAB affiliate in one of the following programs: Keep Anderson County Beautiful, Keep Greene Beautiful, Keep Jackson Beautiful,  Keep Putnam County Beautiful Clean Commission, Keep Maury County Beautiful, and Keep Sevier Beautiful, Inc.

Population 100,001 & Above

One $3,000 award will be given to a KAB affiliate in one of the following programs: Keep Blount Beautiful, Keep Johnson City Beautiful, Keep Knoxville Beautiful, Keep Williamson Beautiful, Memphis City Beautiful Commission, Metro Beautification & Environment Commission, and Scenic Cities Beautiful Commission.
