We all have a role to play in the prevention of litter. It takes just one person, one school, one business, one organization to positively impact the behavior of others in their community.
Keep Tennessee Beautiful believes not only in litter pick-up, but in preventing litter at its source. We are committed to changing attitudes toward litter so that we can all take pride in a clean, beautiful Tennessee.
We sponsor and participate in various litter prevention and pick-up programs, including:
Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest annual community improvement program, brings the power of 3.8 million volunteers and participants to create local change. Activities included beautifying parks and recreation areas, cleaning seashores and waterways, handling recycling collections, picking up litter, planting trees and flowers, and conducting educational programs and litter-free events.
The online litter hotline is available for concerned citizens like yourself to take action by letting us know when you witness littering from vehicles on the state’s roadways. Residents can call toll-free 1-877-8-LITTER or submit reports here.
Tennessee’s Adopt-A-Highway Program provides an opportunity for individuals and groups concerned about the environment to take an active role in preserving and protecting our state’s natural beauty.
Since the program’s inception in 1989, our volunteers have collected more than 12 million pounds of litter from Tennessee’s roadsides. These valuable contributions are helping produce cleaner roadsides, reduce maintenance costs, and boost litter prevention awareness in the “Volunteer State.”
The Awards of Excellence celebrates the past, and also looks toward the future. TDOT and KTnB recognizes the environmental achievements and legacies of people and organizations who work to improve their community’s appearance through public education programs.
Keep Tennessee Beautiful (KTnB) is working to educate high school students, coaches, officials, and principals on the importance of recycling and litter reduction. KTnB encourages all high school sporting events to be promoted as "Litter Free Events". KTnB will provide a “Litter Free Event” banner and a box of trash bags to all high schools that register.
Recycling mines valuable materials out of 'garbage' in order to more sustainably create products that we use everyday - from water bottles to carpet, glass, automobles and even clothing.
Keep Tennesse Beautiful is proud to be a part of numerous recycling programs on both a local and state-wide level, including:
Since 1997, communities across the country have come together on November 15 to celebrate America Recycles Day. More than a celebration, America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling programs in the United States. One day to educate and motivate. One day to get our neighbors, friends and community leaders excited about what can be accomplished when we all work together. One day to make recycling bigger and better 365 days a year.
Recycling is the easiest and most effective thing that ANYONE can do to protect natural resources, conserve energy and reduce carbon emissions. Recycling also creates jobs and stimulates our economy. And, friendly competition is a proven way to motivate young people toward adopting sustainable behaviors.
Many schools have been slow to embrace recycling. Through Recycle-Bowl, we hope to galvanize recycling in elementary, middle and high schools across America.
Our Mission is to Invigorate student participation through a national K-12 recycling competition.
- Establish new recycling programs within schools
- Increase recycling rates in schools that currently recycle
- Provide teacher/student educational opportunities about recycling and waste reduction
RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over an 8-week period each spring, colleges across the United States and Canada report the amount of recycling and trash collected each week and are in turn ranked in various categories based on who recycles the most on a per capita basis, as well as which schools have the best recycling rate as a percentage of total waste and which schools generate the least amount of combined trash and recycling. With each week’s updated ranking, participating schools follow their performance against other colleges and use the results to rally their campus to reduce and recycle more.
National recognition is provided to the winning school in each category on the RecycleMania website and in a national press release. Winning schools receive an award made out of recyclable materials, and win the right to host that category’s special traveling trophy for the coming year.
